Welcome to Search and Rescue Canines of Hawaii

We are a small group of dedicated private volunteers training dogs to assist in search and rescue missions across Hawaii. Our mission is to provide highly trained canine teams to aid in locating missing persons and bringing them to safety. With a focus on the elderly, those living with Dementia, Autism, and other "endangered adults", we are making ourselves available to assist families and caretakers within the vital first hours of when someone goes missing. We firmly believe that a family should never feel like they are alone in their search.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I request a search team?

First - CALL THE POLICE and report the person missing. Request the police report number and write it down.

* You DO NOT have to wait 24 hours!! You can report the person as missing immediately. This does not guarantee an immediate police response, but the sooner you alert law enforcement the better. Search is an emergency and every minute counts.

Next - Call us. Our call-out number is a designated 24/7 line for search assistance requests. (808)-429-8026

Is there a cost for your services/assistance?

No. There is no cost for our help. It is our honor and privelege to be able to help our community.

Please keep in mind that this is a private offer of assistance made to our community and at this time we receive no grants, pay or donations. All expenses and time are volunteered at the cost of the canine handler and because of this we may be limited to time frames outside of our regular employment schedule.

Is there any guarantee of success?

No. There is no guarantee of success given nor implied.

A missing person is just that. There are many factors that we cannot know such as whether they were picked up in a vehicle or how many people have "contaminated" the persons scent trail in the time that has passed. Weather, terrain, outside contamination and age of the trail are all signifigant factors in a canine search.

Although we wish we could, We cannot guarantee that we will find your loved one. We cannot guarantee how long it will take to find them, and/or in what physical or mental condition they may be in if and when we locate them. All we can offer is our training for these types of searches, our time, and our most sincere and dedicated effort to help you find your loved one.

Are you a 501-3C Organization?

No. We are private citizens who see an unfilled need in our community. Although we train with and certify through multiple 501-3C Organizations, no help requested or received from us personally is affiliated with, or offered by any 501-3C Organization unless otherwise specified in writing.

Dependant upon the facts and circumstances of the search and whether certain parameters are met, an outside organization may be willing to assist. If this occurs, I will inform the requesting party and with their permission, I will turn over the request for assistance to the contact person of that Organization.

If you would prefer to only request assistance from an active 501-3C type organization, I am happy to refer you to some who may be able to help. I cannot however, guarantee their acceptance of the search in any way, shape or form. If your request for assistance from an outside organization is turned down, it is still possible to request a Search and Rescue Canines of Hawaii private volunteer team to assist. We will review your request per our guidelines and will offer our help if we are able. If made, Our private offer of assistance will not include any involvement of any outside organization that refused the request, nor will they be liable in any way for that search.

Are there searches you will not take?

Yes. We reserve the right to refuse any search and for any reason. We also reserve the right to end a search at any time and for any reason. The following circumstances are the primary, but not all, of the possible reasons why we would be unable to provide assistance.

We will not take or continue a search where criminal intent is suspected or criminal aspects exist, unless directly approved to do so by the Law Enforcement Agency that is handling the case.

We will not take or continue a search if there is any indication that the requesting party intends any harm to, ill will, or criminal intent towards the missing person. If we suspect or see any evidence of abuse or criminal intent we WILL file a report with law enforcement regardless of whether we agree to the search or not.

We will not take or continue a search that we feel is unreasonably dangerous to our canines, ourselves, or others. We reserve the right to postpone or end a search at any time for any safety reasons/concerns.

What do you require to take on a search assignment?

The following are the minimum requirements for us to utilize a canine team however, each request will be reviewed on an individual basis.

A "scent article" of the missing person (something tangible that has been in recent physical contact with the missing person).

A physical place/address the person was last seen or believed to be.

A basic Police report must be filed (general missing persons report with no suspected criminal activity) with a report number to reference if we are successful in the search. If we are successful in our search the police will be the first notified and requested to the place found. This is to ensure the personal safety, well being of, and protection of the individual rights of the missing person.

A signed statement/waiver from the requesting party stating that they have no criminal intent and mean no harm to the missing person. The waiver will also state that the requesting party acknowledges and accepts that there is no guarantee of success and that they release us from any liabilty involved in our search. Waiver must be signed before we can begin any search.

A basic overview form requesting descriptive information about the missing person and their habits/appearance and concerns etc.

A recent photo of the missing person if available.

Will you search for lost animals/pets?

No. Unfortunately we do not take lost pet searches. As there are already so many variables and elements in scent for canines, we train our dogs to ignore animal scent as much as possible. We do this to minimize the chances for our canine to go off track on a different scent. By training our dogs to follow human scent only,  we believe it gives us our best chance in staying on trail and finding missing persons.
